La historia de las Tapas

The history behind tapas is as unique as the dishes themselves. The concept is believed to have originated more than a century ago in Andalusia, It is said that bartenders placed a slice of bread atop their customers glass to prevent fruit flies from drowning in their drinks. It soon became customary to spice up the bread with a slice of cured ham or a piece of cheese, creating an enticing snack that kept diners coming back for more, and so tapas from the Spanish word tapa meaning lid or cover was born.

Over the years tapas evolved into what we now serve today, they are a variety of dishes offering a unique flavor of Spain as well as the whole Mediterranean. Essentially they are entire in themselves, in a large form they are served as meals or in smaller form as snacks. They can be liquid or solid – with or without sauce – complex or simple.

Alongside the tapas don't forget to try out the sangria. Served in most tapas bars, this red wine and fruit combination acts as a wonderful accompaniment to the tapas and helps bring that added flavour of Spain to your taste buds.
